I’ve been dying to write this piece. While I may know a lot about travel for a variety of destinations (and may be the Queen of Research in my family), you can’t know the world like you know your hometown. So these activities for kids in Huntsville, AL are tried and true – from my own youth in Huntsville to parenting my own child now.
Huntsville, Alabama is a city. We have parks, hiking trails, splash pads, and museums. In an ever-growing city, there is something interesting and fresh to do every day, and you could plan a complete year of weekend activities and yet not see everything there is to do in Huntsville.

1. Huntsville Botanical Garden
Our favourite thing about Huntsville is the Huntsville Botanical Garden. I spent a lot of time here as a mother, especially when my daughter was a toddler. The wonderful children’s garden is the finest part of visiting the Garden with children. The interactive features in the children’s garden range from STEM activities to bird gazing to splash ponds. Also, the Purdy Butterfly House, the largest open air butterfly house in the country, is in the children’s garden!
2. Monte Sano State Park
Monte Sano Mountain is a Huntsville landmark that serves as the home to Monte Sano State Park. Hiking, camping, a playground, great views, and plenty of open space await you here! Monte Sano is an excellent choice for events. We’ve been to birthday parties, class reunions, and a variety of other events here. Not to mention the Monte Sano Lodge’s weddings! At Monte Sano, we also like hiking.
3. U.S. Space
Huntsville has a long history with NASA, and there is much of space history on display here. This is also where Space Camp is held! While much of the Space & Rocket Centre will appeal to older children and adults, there are some activities for smaller children as well.

Outside Rocket Park, there are two play spaces, while within the Davidson Centre, there are two. Plus, there are so many interesting sites to see!
4. EarlyWorks Children’s Museum
EarlyWorks Children’s Museum is a hands-on history museum for kids that focuses on Alabama. You can go on a keelboat tour, walk through ancient rooms, play games, and listen to history stories from the talking tree. Also, there is a dedicated section for preschool play that contains a farm, a grocery shop, fishing, puppets, and a wonderful treehouse play area. Adult admission is $12, youngsters ages 4-17 are $10, and youngsters below the age of four are $5. This is yet another excellent option for an annual pass.
5. Alabama Constitution Hall Park & Museum
Alabama became a state in 1819, and inside Constitution Hall, you may experience life as it was then. There is a blacksmith business, a printing press, and the cabinet makers shop where Alabama’s Constitution was signed, among other things. While Constitution Hall was once an only enclosed museum, the surrounding space has recently been to a public park, making it an excellent outdoor space.
6. Historic Huntsville Depot
If you have a train enthusiast in your family, you should go to the Huntsville Depot! This historic monument features a train ride, a model train village and a tour of the depot building (one of the main draws here is inscriptions left on the walls by captured Civil War troops). While the historic tour is for older children, younger children can enjoy a train-themed play area. They’ll also like blowing the enormous train’s whistle. The Huntsville Depot is at 320 Church Street in downtown Huntsville.
