5. Gold Museum

When the Spanish Conquistadors first arrived in Colombia, they couldn’t believe how much gold the indigenous people had and immediately started about robbing them of it.  In truth, most of modern Spain’s wealth began here, as do stories of “El Dorado,” the gold city. Over 55 000 pure gold samples, including ceramics and jewellery, are displayed and preserved at the Museo del Oro. The items date back to pre-Colombian/pre-Hispanic times and are from indigenous societies. Some of these were saved during the Spanish conquest, while others were later returned. The museum houses the world’s largest gold collection!

6. Montserrat Sanctuary

As before stated, Bogota is a very elevated city, and it will take you a few days to adjust and catch your breath. When you’re ready to go a little higher, travel up to Montserrat Sanctuary. Locals see it as a holy site, and its placement is deliberate; on the June solstice, the sun rises behind the hill!
