We can hear some of you now: airsoft shotguns for sale are a gimmick and only fun for plinking.
Sure, that can be said to be true. But it’s also true that you can take an airsoft shotgun into a match and make it work to your advantage.
It’s really all about how you play, and there is a definite place for airsoft shotguns, provided you observe these maxims.
Use It Wisely
Airsoft shotguns, whether spring-powered or gas-powered, will deliver a decidedly lower ROF than even the slowest full-auto AEGs. Even a semi-auto electric-powered airsoft rifle can still be fired faster.
But these AEGs do not produce a spread of 3, 6 or even more pellets with a single shot. In close-quarter combat (CQB), pump action gas and spring-powered airsoft shotguns can be dazzlingly effective.
The closer the range, the more angles, and the smaller the room, the better. There’s a reason the Germans feared the Americans who carried “trench brooms” in the First World War. They worked.
Also, don’t intend to carry an airsoft shotgun if you’re playing in an airosft arena with tons of open space, or in a role where you won’t have constant close support from your teammates carrying AEGs. that’s a recipe for failure. You need support; lean on it.
Create Confusion
A blind burst of shots fired into a room or down a hallway can create massive confusion, especially with good ricocheting. A good airsoft scattergunner will use this to his advantage.
Have the shotgunner lead the charge, spray close quarters will pellets, which causes upset an confusion, then have the AEG-armed players come in and mop up the mess.
Carry a Sidearm with Good Handling and Capacity (or More Than One)
If you carry an airsoft shotgun, carrying a capable sidearm is not an option, it is an imperative.
Glock airsoft guns and airsoft pistols like the Action Army AAP-01 are great, as are some hi-capas like those from Tokyo Marui.
Carry one if not two, and choose them based on capacity and ROF. You need something easy handling, that shoots fast, and has good capacity. Hopefully you’ll never need to draw it but you must still be prepared.
Use a One-Point Sling
One-point slings might be the sort of thing you think about when carrying an AEG, but the principle is the same. You need good retention if you ever need to draw your sidearm.
It’s even more important here because there might be times in which you actually have to draw your sidearm to take advantage of the higher ROF. In that case, a one-point sling will make it easier for you to hang onto your airsoft shotgun.
Be Prepared with Contingency Plans
If you carry an airsoft shotgun, be ready to have a few tricks up your sleeve. The three best of these are flash grenades, smoke grenades, and regular airsoft grenades.
The former will dazzle and confuse, smoke grenades will obscure, and regular airsoft grenades can help dispatch multiple opponents at once.
If you ever get overwhelmed by the opposition, having a few of these different types of grenades in your vest might be the trump card that saves your skin in an airsoft event.
Use Range, Cover, and Concealment to Your Advantage
If you contend with an airsoft shotgun, it’s all about getting close. At greater ranges a semi-auto AEG has every advantage over you – but not up close.
Play corners, hide in tight spaces, and come upon shacked-up adversaries silently before opening up.
You want to get close, not keep your distance.
