Product packaging mainly aims to protect its content from damage during packing, handling, shipping, and distribution. Product packaging also keeps an item safe from external factors that would otherwise ruin or destroy it, such as natural elements (i.e., sunlight, rain, snow, wind, dirt, etc.). For these reasons, product packaging must be sturdy and reliable to protect the product inside.
However, most product packages use environmentally harmful materials, the prime example being plastic. Companies have used plastic packaging for many years. However, the environment harbors damage from toxic chemicals, such as dioxins, phthalates, vinyl chloride, ethylene dichloride, lead, and cadmium, which are released when elements like sunlight hit the surface of the plastic.
Around 80% of marine debris is plastic, and about 79% of plastic waste is sent yearly to landfills or the ocean. Unfortunately, the world will never cease to use product packaging.
While it’s difficult to stop using plastic instantly, you can still do your best to reduce your plastic consumption and keep it away from the oceans and landfills by practicing recycling.
